Environmental Biotechnology Workshop

Date:
Monday, July 12, 2010 - 8:00pm - Friday, July 16, 2010 - 3:00pm

This workshop is for 6-12th grade teachers and will be held at the University of Delaware's Virden Center and the Delaware Biotechnology Institute (depending on the day)

The application of environmental technology to solve our ever expanding need to live in harmony with the environment is critical our quality of life. This workshop will explore how technology is being used to access environmental indicators of water, soil, and air quality, as well as animal populations.

Delaware’s sophisticated system of environmental monitoring of provides data to local and national databases. Tracking tagged animals or using chemical markers for ground water movement are environmental technologies commonly used by researchers to regulate populations or manage water use. The data collected through technology have management implications linked to our quality of life. For example, population studies in Delaware of horseshoe crabs reveal associated impacts on global shorebird populations but also are important to pharmaceutical industries around the globe as well as shorebird populations. Water pollution issues in one state influences litigation in another, the web of life is complex and linked in ways we are just beginning to understand.

In Environmental Technology, you will explore content and experiences to introduce your students to the world of cutting edge environmental science with emphasis on Delaware’s programs to understand the world around us.

This course is offered through Delaware’s National Science Foundation EPSCoR, a state wide effort to expand research and science education. Room, board and program fees are covered by the EPSCoR Program.
