Weather Observations
Though often considered signs of spring, many robins spend the whole year in their breeding range, which includes most of the United States. During winter, robins often retreat to woodlands where berry-producing trees and shrubs are common. Their year-round abundance depends on the severity of winter weather and the availability of food.
Weather is of interest to robins and humans alike. The Delaware Environmental Observing System maintains 45 automated weather stations in the region, providing up-to-date information that is useful for everyone: environmental scientists, emergency management professionals, natural resource managers — even amateur meteorologists! In addition to its own weather stations, the system also collects land and water data from other networks. This information includes such things as stream flow, tides, waves, road weather conditions, and water quality. Photo by Lisa Tossey
