What better way to celebrate National Seafood Month than to enjoy the bounty of the sea? Generally, seafood is as nutritious as it is delicious. Eating fish and shellfish has many health benefits, and seafood caught in the U.S. is sustainable and safe. Seafood is a nutrient rich food that is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, and Dietary Guidelines recommend adults consume at least eight ounces per week.

But many consumers have also heard warnings about mercury consumption or the safety concerns associated with raw seafood consumption. Seafood experts from Sea Grant programs around the country have come together to create Seafood Health Facts, a website that aims to guide consumers about the health benefits and any potential problems associated with seafood consumption. It also provides tips on ways to prepare seafood safely, and maximize nutritional value.
