On June 30, join Delaware Sea Grant and the University of Delaware for a teacher professional development workshop focusing on ocean exploration. In this one-day, hands-on workshop, participants will gain a background in marine science and ocean exploration as well as engage in a research cruise with University of Delaware scientists.
The workshop will begin with an overview of the day and an introduction to Ocean Literacy. In the first half of this workshop, participants will tour UD’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Delaware. During this tour, participants will learn about the marine research being conducted at the University of Delaware as well as the tools being used to conduct this research. Participants will also become familiar with resources and activities that they can use to integrate marine science and ocean content into their classroom instruction. During the second half of the workshop, participants will take part in a research cruise aboard the 46-foot research vessel the R/V Joanne Daiber. During this cruise, participants will work side-by-side with University of Delaware scientist to conduct marine research.
This workshop is appropriate for teachers or education providers of students in grades 5 to 12. Participants will receive a $100 stipend plus a one –year memberships to the Mid-Atlantic Marine Education Association and the National Marine Education Association. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
