In 2022, a grant from the State of Delaware helped experts from Delaware Sea Grant and the University of Delaware create an oyster hatchery and laboratory that will boost production of the Eastern Oyster. Located on the University of Delaware’s Lewes campus, the hatchery will house and nurture single-seed larvae into young oysters, known as “spat,” that farmers and ecosystem managers will be able to grow out for harvest or restoration.
Researchers say that within five years, the hatchery could potentially produce between 50 and 75 million oyster larvae. An in-state source of new oysters will ease one of the most significant remaining hurdles for a revitalized oyster industry.
